Abstract

Literature, Journalism and Activism: Leila Miccolis' Pedagogical Feminism in Lampião da Esquina Newspaper Sheets

The Brazilian civil-military dictatorship (1964-1985) imposed on society several repressive mechanisms, in addition to restricting cultural production and social manifestation. Going against the system in order to give voice to the excluded from society, emerged the so-called alternative press with the Lampião da Esquina newspaper was published by Esquina Editora LTDA between 1978 and 1981. Lampião da Esquina took center stage in the national discussion of homosexuality, the relationship between the body and pleasure, and the ways of loving and living. One of the strategies adopted by Lampião to introduce such discussions was the use of literature, with poems, poetry, suggestions of literary works, reviews and criticism, a true abecedary of reflections. During its existence, there was a recurring demand from the feminist movement for the participation of women in the editorial board of Lampião and their creation of content for the periodical. Among its contributors, the poet, editor and playwright Leila Miccolis stands out. She brought together literature, journalism, and activism for the construction of gender imagery and feminist issues. This research is based on the analysis of the dramaturg's texts in the journal and aims to understand the use of literature and the feminist pedagogical practice of Leila Miccolis in Lampião da Esquina newspaper sheets and the formation of feminist perspective within the fledgling homosexual movement in times of dictatorship.
